was as though the fashion world had suddently discovered colour anf
freedom. A kaleidoscopic liberation took place after centuries of restriction.
It was epitomised by the miniskirt - one small piece of material for a woman,
one giant leap for womankind. Men, too, had one of those brief periods in history when they could strut about in rich plumage. The streets of the West were thronged with dedicated followers of fashion, in Italian suits, in floral shirts, in hippie furs and flowin kaftnas. Designers and models became celebrities. People who cared little for fashion knew all about Mary Quant, Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy. Carnaby street and the King's Road were familiar names to millions who had never been near London. The designs flowed from the drawing boards of top couturiers, and the mass-produced variations on the designs filled the rails of the chain stores and boutiques. Some predicted that it would lead to a collapse of morals, to anarchy - or worse, to joy. The Pill and the miniskirt seemed to promise some kind of Shavian Utopia, providing the maximum of temptation with the maximum of opportunity. FRENCH |
| Carnaby Carnaby's reputation for fashion and design was first established in the 1960's, during the " swinging London " years. Although a popular tourist destination through the 1970's until the late 1990's, the area became dominated byshops selling souvenirs and cheap clothing. fut un peu comme si la mode avait soudain découvert la couleur et
la liberté de style. Une libération kaléidoscopique
se produisit, après des siècles de restrictions. La mini-juppe
résume à elle seule ce phénomène. Un petit bout
de tissu pour habiller une femme et un pas de géant pour les femmes
en général. Pour les hommes, ce fut aussi comme une paranthèse durant laquelle ils purent aller et venir parés comme des paons. Les rues des pays occidentaux groullaient d'aficionados de la mode, vêtus de costumes italiens, de chemises à fleurs, de fourures hippies et d'amples cafetans. Les couturiers et le mannequins devinrent des célébrités. Même ceux qui s'intéressaient peu à la mode connaissaint tout de la vie de Mar Quant, de Jean Shrimpton et de Twiggy. Carnaby Street et King's Road étaient devenus fmiliers à des millions de gens qui n'avaient pourtant jamais mis les pieds à Londres. La mode était dessinée par les plus grands couturiers. Elle était ensuite recopiée de mille façons et produite industriellement avant de venir garnir les rayons des grands magasins et des boutiques. Certains prédisaient que tout cela aboutirait à la fin de l'ordre moral, à l'anarchie ou, pire au bonheur. La pillule et la mini-juppe semblaient annoncer une utopie imaginée par Bernard Shawn alliant toutes les tentations à toutes les occasions possibles.
